This Website is dedicated to the life, times, and works of the pastor James Russell Miller D.D. James Miller is relatively common name and the site also captures information about other Millers of the same era.
The parallels between the American pastor and the Scottish surgeon James Miller F.R.S.E., F.R.C.S.E., Surgeon in Ordinary to the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince Consort for Scotland are rather curious.
The surgeon was born in Scotland and the pastor’s ancestors came from Scotland. The Pastor’s father and grandfather were called James and the surgeon’s father was also called James. The pastor's father’s full name was James Alexander and the surgeon’s son was called Alexander. Both the pastor and surgeon were Prebesterian, both believed in complete abstinence from alcohol, and both were authors. One was a minister and the other was the son of a minister. Apart from the family name there is no indication of any close family relationship.
Nephalism means complete abstinence from alcohol except for medical purposes. The book Nephalism was published in 1861 by the Scottish Temperance League, Glasgow. Printed by S. and T. Dun of 26 West Nile Street Glasgow. It has 214 pages of text and 6 pages listing the temperance works published by the league.
The list includes the surgeon’s previous book Alcohol: Its
