Dates of First Publication

Alphabetical

The vast majority of this information has been gleaned from book publisher’s notices. The veracity of the source varies with practitioner. Some vendors provide delightful snippets of information that are not readily available to one not associated with the book trade. A surprising number affirm that they are selling a first edition, a statement which often seems grounded in wishful thinking. Also unexpected is the news that the algorithm for determining the number of pages in a book can change dramatically across the industry. The greatest sin of course is spelling the title wrong.

Despite these external difficulties and a certain internal incompetence this catalogue of Miller's books and pamphlets and continues to grow and coalesce into a complete and veracious reference. There are some titles in the list below whose parentage, or very existence, is still in question. Only when there is a substantial positive evidence will they be listed in the books and booklets pages. Over the last few months, certain writings, which were thought to be separate works have been discovered to be parts of larger works. The number of known works has decreased slightly.

If this were a commercial site the reader could complain at the inconsistences in the layout and perhaps snicker at the ‘notes to self' littering the table. However, we happy band of volunteers say “I'll get round to it one day,” “It's a work in progress,” and “if you want something better, come and help."

Secrets of Happy Home Life 1894 In a little booklet called, “Secrets of Happy Home Life” J.R. Miller wrote (in 1894) about the secrets of happy home life. ” What are the secrets of happy home life? The answer might be given in one word-Christ. Christ at the marriage-altar; Christ on the bridal journey; Christ when the new home is set up; Christ when the baby is born; Christ when a child dies; Christ in the pinching times; Christ in the days of plenty; Christ in the nursery, in the kitchen, in the parlor; Christ in the toil and in the rest; Christ along all the years; Christ when the wedded pair walk toward the sunset gates; Christ in the sad hour when farewells are spoken, and one goes on before and the other stays, bearing the unshared grief. Christ is the secret of happy home life.”

“Miller’s forefather, Thomas McCarrell, was a weaver originally from Ireland who served with George Washington at Valley Forge during the American Revolution.”
Mrs. Charles E. Cowman / Lettie B. Cowman
Streams in the Desert 1925 Lettie Cowman quotes from Dr. Miller extensively. He is one of her favourite sources. She makes a fair effort to give credit to her sources, but occasionally it is difficult to determine who wrote what in her books. This is situation is exacerbated when she quotes some poetry that appears in Miller. Often she reproduces only the part that Miller quoted, possibly not realizing that it was part of a longer work. Because Miller is usually deficient in recording the authors of the poems he has used, Cowman has no easy way of determining the writer.
The situation reaches comic proportions when various inspirational Websites publish the same snippet of a poem attributing it to Cowman, but not Miller or the original author of the poem.

All of Cowman’s books seem to be in copyright, but the sources she quotes from are most often out of copyright.

OriginallyThe Ministry of Comfort

“Life on this sin-cursed earth brings trouble and heartache to every person at some time or another. Sometimes the sorrows of life seem heavier the we can bear. At such a time, the heart cries out, ‘Why, Lord? Why has this happened to me? What have I done? What is wrong?’ Or we may cry again and again for relief and deliverance from the trouble, only to have it continue on with seemingly no respite. Take courage, dear friend. There is a reason. God is working out His purposes. The burden will be lifted. God has not forsaken you. He is ‘the God of all comfort,’ and, according to His never-failing promises, He will bring comfort to your heart and rest to your soul. Every child of God will find his soul lifted up in strong courage and faith as he meditates on this vital message. A valuable addition to the library of every devout Christian.”
