The book Blessed be Drudgery was published circa 1896. It is out of copyright. In The Ministry of Comfort Dr. Miller mentions a recent author, without mentioning W.C. Gannett, Comfort was published in 1898, so Drudgery must have been published earlier, say 1886.
In Canada and the UK copyrights lapse 50 years after the death of the author. Which means 1973 in the case of W.C. Gannett. In the USA, all works published before 1923 are out of copyright. For works not yet out of copyright, these rules have been undergoing revision, so don’t apply these guidelines to other authors or countries.
