In His Steps

by

Charles Monroe Sheldon (1857 -1946)

This Website is dedicated to the works, life, and times of James Russell Miller D.D (1840 - 1912). The connection between Dr. Miller, and Charles Monroe Sheldon is whimsical in the extreme. Namely, both authors were American clergymen who each wrote a book entitled In His Steps.

J.R. Miller was first writing his in 1885 when he was 45. This was a short booklet of only 112 pages and 12 chapters. Its object was to help those who were beginning the Christian life.

Eleven years later in 1896, C.M. Sheldon wrote his book at the age of 39. This book, of 31 chapters, was the fiction account of the Rev. Henry Maxwell and his congregations travails in doing what Jesus would do.

During his life time Miller's total book sales were some 2 million copies of all his publications.

Sheldon’s book, due to an error by the initial publisher, accidently fell into the public domain. This allowed all who wanted to print copies with out paying royalties. Bowden, the London publisher, sold over 3 million copies of the penny edition.

There are similarities between the two authors. Both wrote numerous books, both were active in creating new churches and opening Sunday schools.

James Miller came Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication. Charles Sheldon became editor-in-chief of the Christian Herald.

However, there is a dramatic difference in focus. Miller’s main output was advice on how to live under the burdens life places on our shoulders. Sheldon was an activist, campaigning vigourously to change existing social conditions.

Both have their place in God's scheme.

Sheldon’s In His Steps was transcribed by volunteers of the Gutenberg Project.

Miller’s In His Steps was transcribed by Paula Kuczynski,an other volunteer.
