Ralph Connor was the pen name of Charles William Gordon. Charles Gordon was born in Glengarry County, Ontario. However this was seven years before confederation and it was then called Canada West in the Province of Canada, which was one of the six separate colonies in British North America. His father was Daniel Gordon, Free Kirk minister in the Indian Lands, and his mother Mary Robertson.
Gordon was educated at the University of Toronto, Knox College, and the University of Edinburgh. In 1890 he was ordained and then undertook four years of mission work in Banff, Alberta. Like J.R. Miller he was a Presbyterian minister.
Also like Miller her served at the front. In World War I, he was chaplain of the 43rd Cameron Highlanders and was later became the senior Protestant Chaplain to the Canadian Forces. In 1917 he was sent to the United States to rally the Americans to the Allied cause: at one point aggressively lecturing Woodrow Wilson on the moral inadequacies of American neutrality.
At the height of his career he was arguably the best-known living Canadian and his name was a household word throughout the English-speaking world. He wrote 24 novels, 3 shorter tales, 5 religious pamphlets, and one biography.
