Not many of us are living at our best. We linger in the lowlands because we are afraid to climb into the mountains. The steepness and
ruggedness dismay us, and so we stay in the misty valleys and do not learn the mystery of the hills. We do not know what we lose in our self
indulgence, what glory awaits us if only we had courage for the mountain climb, what blessing we should find if only we would move to the uplands of
God. –
The Preface in "Unto the Hills
We should begin now to live the immortal life, to practice immortality. We should think and plan and choose, these common days, for
immortality. We should do nothing we should ever wish we had not done. We should say no words we shall ever want unsaid. We should build only fabrics
we shall be glad to look upon in endless years. Immortality has begun already in the youngest life. It is not something we shall enter upon when we
get to heaven. It is going on now in the schoolroom, on the playground, in the friendships and amusements of the young people, and in all their
hours, however spent. We must practice immortality all our days if we would realize its fullest meaning. –
