Jesus and I Are Friends

Chapter 7

Thirty-Two Years an Editor

Chapter 7

During the closing months of his service with the Christian Commission Dr. Miller thought seriously of turning aside from the ordained ministry that he might devote himself to a wider ministry by the pen. Already he felt the longing to give to the world burning messages that would reach hundreds of thousands instead of the few hundreds who might be attracted by his preaching. To some of his intimate friends he outlined a plan of preparation for newspaper work to which he had all but committed himself. He thought of taking a year for study in Edinburgh, to be followed by a year in Germany. As he traveled he proposed to live in the homes of the people that he might learn of their life and their problems, and so be able to carry back to America an enlarged knowledge of the human heart and its needs. This he felt would be necessary if he was to be successful in the best sense in the work of which he dreamed. Letters were written to the editors of several metropolitan newspapers telling of his plans, and asking for an engagement to write articles about his experiences; in this way he would be able to pay a portion of the expense of the projected two years abroad.

Yet he could not give up the ministry for which he had been preparing when the war interrupted his course. Thoughts of foreign travel and of later editorial work were put aside, while he returned to the seminary and entered the pastorate.
