Thirty-Two Years an Editor

Often such an invitation as this was given:

“I shall always be glad to have letters from the Home Department students, bringing to me, when they so desire, questions, difficulties, experiences of trouble or sorrow, in which I may be permitted to give a little assistance.”

The letters came in numbers. And always a warm personal message was sent in answer that brought correspondents nearer to the editor’s Friend.

Dr. Miller always emphasized as a prime requisite for successful editorial work that a writer must prepare his work with individuals in mind. To an associate to whom he committed the Home Department Quarterly he expressed his feeling thus:

“Try writing each paragraph with some definite home in mind. Think of yourself as a pastor giving help and counsel to the invalids or the burdened in that home. Then your work will have the lifelike quality, and you will hear from many who will wonder how you came to know of them.”

It was owing to just such writing as this that Dr. Miller saw the circulation of the Home Department Quarterly grow within twelve years from nothing to 128,000.
