For me the most exciting event of the month was the addition of The Life of Dr. J.R. Miller by John T. Faris. The new information in this book prompted a rewrite of home page. On the seventh the old home page was retired and is archived here.
J.R. Miller D.D was considered by many to be the most gifted and popular devotional writer of his era. There are several sources, on the Web, for Miller’s works, but none is complete. This site exists with the aim of gathering all his works into one place. During his lifetime Dr. miller wrote over 60 books, booklets, and pamphlets. No known complete list of his works exists. The list on this site is incomplete. Each month a hitherto unknown book by Miller is added the list. This is not a short term project as it might take several years to gather all of James Miller’s works and publish them on the Web. Hence, all offers of help will gladly be accepted.
James Russell Miller: the eldest son of James Alexander Miller and Eleanor Creswell Miller was born on March 20, 1840 at Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania He served with the United States Christian Commission, an agency set up to minister to the troops, during the civil war. When the war ended he completed his theological studies and was ordained and installed on September 11, 1867. On June 22, 1870, when he was thirty, he married Miss Louise E. King. They had three children. His obituary mentions a grand-child, yet details are still missing.
From 1867 until shortly before his death Dr. Miller was a faithful pastor in several churches and missions. In 1880 he became assistant to the Editorial Secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, eventually becoming its Editorial Superintendent. J.R. Miller died on July 2, 1912. He was 72 years old.
J.R. Miller was one of the best selling Christian authors of his era, Miller had a total circulation of over two million copies during his lifetime.
